Ceiling tiles are lightweight tiles used in the interior of buildings and are made from lightweight materials such as plastics and mineral wood.
Fitting Ceiling Tiles
Suspended ceiling tile performance covers are one of these types of types of ceiling tiles as the board together using suspended rails which in theory when it has been constructed looks like a grouted wall. There are several factors about ceiling covers including humidity resistance, light and acoustics reflectance.
The tiles are placed on a steel grid suspending by the ceiling and depending on the tile selected, may provide extra attributes to the building such as, enhanced fire protection, and improved indoor air quality. Also frequently called ceiling panels, or drop-ceiling tiles, they offer the advantage of easy access to wiring and plumbing above the ceiling grid, and can be easily changed, removed, or replaced as needed.
Materials Used For Ceiling Tiles
They are fabricated from some of the following materials;
- Perlite is a volcanic glass that has high water content. It is naturally made and has the unusual property of greatly expanding when heated.
- Mineral Wool is a man made material made from fibres taken from minerals or metal oxides, be they man made (synthetic) or natural.
- Tin is obtained from the mineral cassiterite, where it occurs as an oxide. It is the classic alloying metal to make bronze.
- Aluminium is found in bauxite ore and is renowned for its ability to resist corrosion and its light weight.
Ceiling Tile Designs
Ceiling tiles frequently have patterns comprised of holes, to improve their sound absorption, though many have a molded surface providing a textured, sculpted look to the ceiling. Some tiles can have a decorative photo/transfer surface, some are approved for installing under fire extinguisher sprinkler heads so the sprinklers do not show and some are certified for indoor air quality by the Green Guard Institute. There are tiles available that are mould and moisture resistant and they also enhance acoustical properties. Recycling old tiles depends upon the material used to make them, and with some landfills no longer accept traditional mineral fiber tiles, they must be recycled by the manufacturer.
- Victorian Ceiling Tiles are a classic design suitable for older houses. These tiles have heavy scrollwork which adds a touch of elegance to any room. The sculpted look can complement woodwork, furniture designs and a home's overall architectural style.
- Tin Ceiling tiles are available in paintable aluminium, they are factory-finished in clear or white-coated aluminium or brass and solid copper.
